Our adventure days out are fantastic for improving kids’ emotional wellbeing, physcial fitness and cognitive function, all whilst building social skills, boosting confidence and, of course, having lots of fun!
From rock climbing to watersports, we’re ready to share the best activities in Devon and the surrounding areas with you. Keep reading to find out more about what your child could experience this August with Rock and Rapid Adventures!
About our August Activity Week in North Devon
So what’s it all about? From Wednesday 21st to Friday 23rd of August, we will be running a range of exhilarating outdoor activities in the North Devon area. Each session costs just £50 per person for the day, but if you book more than one activity you can also get a juicy discount, making each day just £40pp.
Children must be aged 7 and above to join us for these fun activities. Each activity day is open to up to 14 participants, although if more people would like to book onto a session after this point, they can do so if they are able to arrange their own transport to and from the site where the activity will take place.
Otherwise, we will meet for each activity day at our climbing centre in South Molton at 9am, before driving together to the activity site and returning to the centre for 5pm.
We ask that all participants please wear appropriate clothing for outdoor pursuits, as well as a waterproof coat and warm jacket – it is a British summer, after all! You will also need to bring along a packed lunch.
Every one of our activities is led by our expert instructors, all of whom are highly qualified and experienced in carrying out safe and enriching outdoor activity sessions with children and adults of all ages.
Climbing at Valley of the Rocks
The first of our activity days will take place on Wednesday 21st August. On this day, we will be heading over to one of our favourite spots for outdoor climbing in Devon – Valley of the Rocks! This spectacular corner of North Devon is the ideal location for a day of rock climbing, with its impressive rock formations jutting out of the valley overlooking the crystal-clear seas just off Lynmouth.
Whether your child is a first-time climber or a regular member of one of our kids’ climbing clubs, they will love every second of their climbing adventure at Valley of the Rocks. We beging with a short hike through the verdant valley, passing friendly wild goats on the way to the base of the towering rocks where we will climb.
Next, your child will learn about the fundamentals of safe outdoor climbing, such as belaying, safety knots and ropework. After we’re all set up and up to speed, it’s time to climb! Each child will get several opportunities to climb top-rope routes under the supervision of our expert instructors, with routes suitable for all abilities. Then it’s time to abseil down, with some pretty special views over the Atlantic Ocean!
For this activity, any current climbers should bring along their harness and climbing shoes. For newbies, we can provide shoes, harnesses and helmets at no additional cost. Valley of the Rocks is often a little blustery, so make sure to pack warm clothes, comfy closed-toe shoes and a waterproof coat in case of rain.
We would recommend this activity for children who are members of our kids’ clubs, or have attended a taster session with us, so that they will be comfortable climbing on rock.
Wimbleball Lake Watersports
On Thursday 22nd of August, we’ll be heading for lakes! For our special watersports day, we travel to Wimbleball Lake in Exmoor National Park to enjoy the best activities on offer in the South West, from kayaking and canoeing to rafting and much more!
It doesn’t matter whether your child is a watersports afficionado in the making, or if it’s their first time trying out water-based activities – this calm lake is the perfect place for a day of outdoor pursuits.
We will begin with a safety briefing, where our qualified instructors will teach participants what to do if they enter the water, and how to stay safe throughout the day. Then the real fun will begin! Your child will learn various techniques such as paddling, steering, and navigating the waters – whilst building confidence on the water and improving their teamwork skills.
For our watersports activity day, please ensure your child wears old clothes you don’t mind getting wet, along with a change of clothes and a warm, waterproof coat!
We recommend this activity for children who are confident swimmers, are comfortable climbing on low-level rocks and swimming in open water.
Rock climbing at Dartmoor
Finally, on Friday 23rd of August, we will venture over to Dartmoor National Park for one final day of rock climbing! Dartmoor is a famous climbing destination, and has plenty to offer both beginner and experienced climbers. Here, the various tors are home to unique granite formations, which provide sturdy and exciting top-rope climbing at various levels of difficulty.
The day begins with a refreshing hike along a trail in the park leading to the ‘crag’ – or rock – where we will be climbing. Next, our instructors will give a safety briefing and ensure everyone knows how to safely use the ropes, tying the correct knots and belaying sufficiently. Then, it’s time to get climbing!
Whatever level your child climbs at, there are plenty of routes for them to enjoy on Dartmoor, building their agility, flexibility and strength as they do so. The views from the top of each route are well worth the climb!
As before, make sure your child brings along their harness and shoes if they have them – or let us know and we’ll provide their equipment. Dartmoor can be cold and windy, so remember to pack warm, windproof clothes and sturdy, close-toed shoes!
Again, this activity is best-suited for children who have past experience of climbing. Why not book in a taster session before their day out to help them get the most out of their adventure?!
