It’s the sort of thing that always comes with a “don’t try this at home” warning when you see some crazy guy on Britain’s Got Talent wanging a huge axe at a giant dartboard, but we can let you in on a little secret……throwing axes is FUN!
It’s easy to do and difficult to master – a bit like throwing darts, but much MUCH bigger, and of course, waay more dangerous. If you buy your own axe at B&Q and chuck it around your back garden while next door Jim is in his garden, watering the roses the other side of a VERY thin fence panel, you’ll get the idea.
Book a session with us though, and you’ll be in the safe (and gently moisturised) hands of our professional instructors.
They’ve got two very important jobs:
Job 1: Make sure you have a fantastic time
Job 2: To make sure you’re still alive at the end of it
Axe throwing is the perfect way to celebrate a special occasion (maybe not Nan’s 90th), a great team builder, or a fun way to spend some time with friends, family, or Jim from next-door.
Axe throwing is suitable for ages 13+
A session lasts for one hour, and costs £15pp
Why not combine your Axe Throwing Session with an Archery Session as well whilst you are in North Devon?
If you’d told us ten years ago that hurling sharp metal objects at wooden targets would become one of the most popular group activities in the country, we’d probably have nodded slowly and backed away. But here we are – and honestly? We get it completely.
Axe throwing is one of those rare activities that delivers instant satisfaction. The moment that blade spins through the air and thunks satisfyingly into the target, something deep in your brain lights up. Is it primal? Slightly. Is it brilliant? Absolutely.
We’re based at Hacche Mill near South Molton in the heart of North Devon, which makes us the perfect stop for anyone visiting Exmoor, Barnstaple, Bideford or the wider Devon area who fancies doing something a bit more memorable than another coastal walk. (We love a coastal walk. But still.)
Your axe throwing session in North Devon lasts one hour and is fully guided by one of our professional instructors from start to finish. You’ll kick off with a proper safety briefing, because axes are, when all is said and done, axes – and then it’s straight into learning the technique. Our instructors break it down into easy steps, so even the most coordination challenged among you will be landing clean throws before long.
Once the basics are locked in, the competitive side of things starts to take over. Scoring rounds, challenges and a healthy amount of group rivalry tend to make the session fly by. We’ve never had a group that didn’t end up fully invested by the end – it’s that kind of activity.
Just to manage expectations……..You will not leave as a professional axe thrower. You will leave very happy though.
Axe throwing at Rock & Rapid is suitable for ages 13 and up, and works brilliantly for a huge range of groups from family days out and birthday celebrations to corporate team building days, stag dos, hen parties and everything in between.
It’s a brilliant equaliser too. Size, fitness, age – none of it matters much once you’re standing in front of that target. We’ve seen teenagers out throw seasoned adults, and quiet members of the group suddenly turn out to be surprisingly lethal. In the best possible way.
Why stop at one activity? Axe throwing pairs brilliantly with our Archery Sessions combine both for the ultimate medieval-themed morning (capes optional but encouraged). Or browse our full range of outdoor activities in Devon to build your perfect group day out. Sessions are £15 per person for one hour. What people say
As a family of five who like to try new things, I can’t recommend this enough. The staff member who helped us was top class. Friendly, accommodating and keen. Although, we were all at different levels of experience, some of us complete notices at climbing – we all managed to spend an enjoyable couple of hours.
Really good day out and cater for all levels of ability. As complete beginners we were a bit nervous to begin with but soon got up to speed. Very good value for money.
To arrange a weekend that is a bit different and feels special is becoming harder to do so it was refreshing ti find somewhere that was happy to listen to our thoughts and ideas and let us run with them. Had a fantastic weekend that combined indoor climbing, raft building challenged and a monster design and build task to product a melon flinging catapult in a morning on a budget of £100. All in a really good time had by all with very relaxed and friendly staff. Would recommend for arranging those vents that are a bit more specialised.
I have been climbing here on and off for almost 4 years now. I keep coming back. This is by far one of the most friendly, helpful and safe climbing centres I have ever been to. The staff are constantly on guard for any mishaps and are very approachable with any and all concerns Especially talking through hypothetical situations and scenarios. Their knowledge is current and at the highest level. Definitely a place to go, and keep going.
I started climbing here about a year ago and love the atmosphere and people I meet. Ladies might, on a Monday which is run by Simmo has become a weekly must. (the coffee is pretty awesome too.) Great instruction is given on technique including safety) plus games are put together to improve climbing ability. I bring my nieces here and they love it. It’s exercise without feeling like you’re i a gym. I can’t recommend it enough!
We visited this whole on our holiday on a rainy day, my son enjoyed it so much he wanted to go back so we did. Twice! The staff are super friendly and very knowledgable. We will no doubt be back next year!
